As of July 1, Santa Energy has increased the biofuel blend in our heating oil from 5% biofuel (B5) to 10% biofuel (B10). This change comes as part of new state biofuel-blending requirements in Connecticut and New York, where suppliers and distributors are now required to deliver heating oil with at least 10% biofuel content.
The good news is that this change doesn’t require any modifications to your heating equipment. Bioheat® fuel is fully compatible with existing oil heating systems, so you can enjoy the benefits of cleaner energy without the stress or expense of upgrades.
By making the move to B10, Santa Energy customers are helping reduce emissions and support a more sustainable energy future. B10 eliminates the use of millions of gallons of traditional heating oil each year — the equivalent impact of making over 100,000 homes carbon neutral. It also reduces sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and other harmful emissions, resulting in cleaner air for our communities.
Bioheat® fuel is made by blending ultra-low sulfur heating oil with biofuel, which is produced from renewable resources like soybean oil, inedible corn oil, and recycled cooking oil. Using these surplus feedstocks helps lower greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% compared to petroleum diesel.
Higher blends of Bioheat® fuel, like B10, mean fewer emissions and a smaller carbon footprint. The industry is steadily increasing blend levels with the goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In Connecticut, the blend requirement will rise to B15 by 2030, B20 by 2034, and B50 by 2035.
Switching from B5 to B10 is an important step toward cleaner heating fuel in our region. At Santa Energy, we are committed to meeting these new requirements while ensuring the same reliable service and comfort you count on.
By choosing Bioheat® fuel, you’re not only keeping your home warm — you’re also helping create a healthier environment for future generations.
