Stay stay safe when the weather outside is frightful.

santa winter being preparedWinter weather isn’t usually a surprise, but it’s always unpredictable. As our warm-weather storms get stronger year to year, so do our cold-weather storms. But it’s these winter storms that can leave us without power for a few days that are more life-threatening due to the fact that it’s freezing outside.

Here at Santa Energy our customers come first and making sure you’re safe and sound is part of our commitment to you. We thought this was the perfect time to give you some hints and tips for preparing yourself for a winter emergency.

Step One: Make an Emergency Kit

The first step in preparing for a storm-related emergency at home in the colder months is by putting together a kit of essential items, most of which you already have around your home:

That last item on the list is a big one. Staying positive can get you through so much more than you think. Even though you are in a bad situation but you’ll get through it. How you handle it while you’re in it can make all the difference.

Step Two: Bread, Milk, and Eggs

You never know how long you’re going to be dealing with the power being out at your house, so stocking up on food when a winter storm is coming is a great idea. With the power out, you might not be able to prepare an elaborate meal, so focus on comfort foods that are easy to prepare and require little to no cooking.

The other option is to try and beat the storm and cook up something big that doesn’t need reheating. Stews, soups, and bread are a fan favorite around the Santa office.

And, as always, make sure you get plenty of snacks!

Step Three: Stay Warm

The most important thing to do in a situation like this is to stay warm. Wrap yourself in a blanket and get inside a sleeping bag. If you don’t have a sleeping bag, then pile on more blankets.

Another thing to consider is staying in one area and shutting the doors to rooms you don’t need to go in. You want to find a way to trap heat and keep the heat focused around you and where you are in your house. If you have a fireplace, stay in front of it as much as you can.

You also want to make sure you’re eating as much as you can to keep up your energy, which keeps up your body temperature. Fire up the grill and cook up a couple of steaks or burgers. You might as well find some sort of enjoyment in this uncomfortable situation.

Worth Considering: A Whole-House Backup Generator from Santa

If you live in an area where storms cause your power to go out all the time, year-round, then a whole-house backup generator might be something you consider investing in.

Portable generators are great in a jam but can get to be expensive to run after a few days. They also require constant monitoring so that you don’t run out of gas.

Making things more complicated in a weather-related emergency in the winter is having to rely on a hardware store to refill your propane tank or a gas station for fuel. Both of these places may be in the same situation you’re in – with no power – and therefore wouldn’t be open, which leaves you in the cold. Literally.

A whole-house backup generator from Santa can eliminate having to deal with all of that. Additionally, as they’re wired into your home’s electrical panel, these generators require little to no effort from you to operate during a power outage. When the power goes out, the generator turns on. It’s that simple.

What’s more, Santa can supply the propane for your generator. With our reliable and dependable delivery drivers, we’ll make sure your tank is full before a big winter storm.
