Making a few changes at home can save you money.

santa living efficiently Here we are, January 2023, and we’ve all just faced another rate hike from Eversource. Like everyone else, you’re probably wondering when it will stop.

Instead of focusing on something out of our control, the team here at Santa got together to share some tips and tricks for cutting down your energy consumption and staying comfortable at home this winter.

Ten Tips for Living Efficiently

1. Have an Energy Audit done on your home

Though this won’t provide instant results, it can provide long-lasting ones. Having an energy audit done on your home can benefit you year-round for years to come. Even just switching over your light bulbs to LED bulbs can have a positive impact.

2. Do you feel a draft?

Drafty doors and windows can lower the temperature in your home which can trigger your thermostat. This could lead to a higher energy bill and a higher oil bill. To remedy this situation, we recommend installing draft stoppers to block the outside chill from getting inside.

Depending on the age of your home, you may even consider sealing your windows or any unused doors for the winter.

3. Hold off on doing laundry

When you do the laundry, use cold water and make sure the washer is filled to capacity. This will cut down on both washing and drying and thus cut down on your electric bill, and possibly your water bill, depending on how you get water into your home.

4. Turn off the lights

Parents with young children, this may end up being your biggest challenge yet, but turning off the lights when you leave the room can save on energy consumption. We’re not suggesting you walk around with flashlights, but if you’re not in a room there’s no need to keep the lights on.

5. Lower your water heater temperature to 120º

Making this small adjustment can make a world of difference, especially for larger households where it’s not uncommon for 3-4 people to take a shower each day.

6. Trust your oven

Did you know that every time you open your oven door to check on your food it can cause your oven temp to drop 25º? Use your oven light to check in on your roast, lasagna, etc.

7. Unplug unused electronics and appliances

Most modern devices, even if not being used, can draw a charge and cause your electric bill to shoot up. Consider having Alexa take a vacation and limiting the number of digital clocks around the house. Some of the biggest energy suckers in our homes are the items we leave charging: phones, smartwatches, and laptops to name a few. Once they’re charged, unplug them and unplug their charger.

8. Use “Energy Saver” settings

Most modern electronics, like televisions, appliances, and portable room heating devices may have an energy-saving setting that you can turn on to save energy.

9. How frozen do those TV dinners need to be?

Something we tend to forget is the temperature settings on our freezers. Most manufacturers have a range of temperatures they recommend. In the winter, it’s a safe bet that you can set that to the least demanding setting to save on your electric bill.

10. Dress warm and cozy

Who doesn’t like cozying up in a warm pair of PJs when they’re home? Dressing warmly – and comfortably – can keep you from reaching for the thermostat by keeping your body warm. Just make sure to change before you head into that next Zoom meeting.
