Tips for Being Efficient and Saving Money

In Connecticut, the transition from Winter to Spring can lead to fluctuations in temperature that are not only taxing on your home comfort equipment but

can also lead to an increase in your electricity bill. Here are some tips and tricks from Santa Energy you can do at home to be energy efficient and save money while still staying comfortable.

Let the sunshine in.

Not only does it feel good to light up your home with sunshine, but opening the curtains and letting that sunlight in can warm up your home this time of year.

Open your windows.

This time of year, temperatures usually peak right after noon. That’s the perfect time to open up your windows and get some fresh air in. Not only does the fresh air benefit you, but the warm temperatures can keep you comfortable as well.

Adjust your thermostat.

If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, you’ll want to make sure to set it so it only runs at night. If you don’t have a smart thermostat, now is the perfect time to consider having one installed.

Have your heating and cooling equipment serviced.

At Santa, we always recommend having your air conditioning systems serviced before summer. Even though we’re still feeling that winter chill, get your system serviced now and beat the crowd.

Wait until your laundry basket is full.

We recommended this for the winter months but seeing that electrical rates are still a little high, hold off on washing and drying your clothes until your laundry basket is full. Even Energy Star washers and dryers use a lot of energy, so this is an easy opportunity to save.

Have a cookout!

Nothing beats cooking on the grill; when you’re grilling outside, you’re saving on energy. Who knows, maybe if we all start grilling, it’ll get warmer sooner?

Lower the temperature of your water heater.

Nothing beats a hot shower in the winter, but in the spring that water doesn’t need to be as hot. Lowering the temperature on your water heater by a few degrees won’t be noticeable at first, but you’ll see the benefits on your electricity bill.

Clean your refrigerator.

We’re not just talking about those casseroles you’ve been pushing to the back of the fridge for the last couple of weeks, we’re talking about the condenser coils that are on the back of your fridge. When you’re doing the rest of your spring cleaning, make sure to dust these off so that your refrigerator doesn’t need to work as hard.
